Hey!
Long time no speakage, I know! Sorry about that, but I have been busy having a good time!!
This past week has been good, but unfortunately has just flown by. Let's begin with last Wednesday. The day after the attempt at my camera. I went to school, and things were going fine, until about 11. Rosa and I were sitting in the teacher's lounge and I was reading the schedule, but for some reason all I could see were shooting stars, and the words were blurry. Weird. I thought: "Oh man, I hope I'm not having a stroke!" Later, I was teaching the grade 5's and again, stars. Then I began to get a headache. At lunch, I went down the road to grab some acetominophen (not sure about the spelling) but the headache wouldn't shake. Screaming kids didn't help either, so I decided to go home.
During the bus, I began to feel really sick. "Oh man, it's definitely a migraine," I thought. I managed to hold in my lunch for the bus ride, and we arrived back in San Jose in good time. As soon as I stepped off the bus I got a wiff of some fried chicken and -- BLAGH. Puked in to my hand and some of the garbage can that I tried to run to in time. As if once wasn't enough, I threw up twice more, this time with zero grace or class, right in the middle of the street and the middle of the busiest part of town. Nice.
Thats about as interesting as Wednesday got. I went home and slept, and felt good after a long nap and necessary shower. When I woke up, we had new housemates. Mercedes and her boyfriend Simon had arrived in from Toronto. A really sweet couple, they headed to Jaco for a couple of days, as their orientation wasn't beginning until Saturday. Also in the house to visit was Dylan, a volunteer who has been in CR for 5 months, and who is leaving around the same time I am.
That night Jenn, Maria and I went and checked out an Irish (yes, a Spanish-Irish) pub; comfy, cozy, and great guitar player. After it died down a bit, we travelled to another bar, one that played sweet electronic music that just makes you want to move which serves a mixed population of backpackers and cool locals. Love that bar, Chichos? I think it's called. Whatever, it's awesome. We are definitely frequenting that one.
On Thursday after a "take-it-easy" day at school, I attempted to walk down from Salitral towards central Santa Ana. Well, you know what's coming -- I got lost. Big surprise. I managed to find my way back to the bus and made it home just fine. For dinner, our housemate Daniel had a great idea to try out the BBQ outside. MmmMM. Those Germans (Daniel is German) sure know how to fire up some good sausage and carne!! For our BBQ Daniel had a couple of friends over who were great conversation and company. It was a nice evening with people in the house! (finally!)
On Friday, I prepared myself for a weekend in Jaco, a beach town about 2 hours busride from San Jose. I left the house at 5:30am for a 6 am bus. On the bus, I sat near the front by the window and a Tico sat next to me. His name was Hector and he is orinigally from Limon. Hector speaks English pretty well, and we managed to carry a conversation on in broken Spanglish for the entire ride. It wasn't long before we knew we were friends. I told him about mi novio, so that he wouldn't have the wrong impression, and he respected my boundaries. The road to Jaco was CRAZY-twisty-turny for about 45 minutes, we all tried to hold in our lunches. The bus fearlessly crawled up mountains, hugging the non-guarded curb in the meantime. When we would descend, the driver would rarely apply the brakes, and we would all fear for our lives. Interesting ride, nonetheless, a GREAT view!
Hector knew that I was travelling on my own, and when we arrived in Jaco, he invited me to spend the weekend with his friends to their rented apartment thingy and we hung out all weekend, playing by the pool, and playing soccer on the beach by the crashing waves. What an awesome weekend! Finally got some colour, albeit RED, haha, I look like a lobster. I also learned alot of Spanish this weekend too, Hector coached me and played the role of teacher, which was totally great. I am so glad the weekend "by myself in Jaco" worked out so well!
The last couple days have been equally awesome, I found a bakery on the way to work to fulfill my recent pastry addiction, and I've been enjoying all of our new housemates. I now room with Tanya and Myra, and we also have two young dudes, Graham and Jake. All of the volunteers here are amazing amazing people with hearts of gold and eyes wide open. I love it. We went out to the Chichos bar last night, following up with the Monday night place-to-be-in-San-Jose, Cartel. The band at Cartel last night was incredible. They played a mix of funk-reggae-latin, some Bob Marley covers, and others. We all had such a great time, dancing all night and enjoying the bon-bon-shaking of the band members. Latin dudes sure know how to shake it!!
Today was great, Jenn came with me to work to check out my placement, took some photos. I can't wait to show them off!
Tonight is just a laundry-grocery-catch-up-marking melody of things. I am really excited to (hopefully) go to either Puerto Viejo or Guanacaste this weekend with mi novio's cousins. It's going to be great, if it happens!
With love
